# Brand mention

A brand mention is an occurrence of a brand's name in an AI answer, whether or not the answer links to the brand's site.

Mentions are the basic unit of AI visibility: the share of answers that mention a brand, over a prompt set and a period, is its visibility rate.

Not all mentions are equal. A brand named first in a recommendation list is in a different position from one mentioned as an also-ran, and a mention can be positive, neutral or negative. Trackers record position and sentiment alongside the mention.

Mention detection has to handle variants and misspellings of a name and avoid false positives from generic words, which is why a tracker is configured with the brand's aliases.
