# Earning citations off your own site

Why most citations go to third-party pages, how to find the sources that shape your category, and how to earn a place on them.

## Most citations are not yours

Across a category's prompts, a handful of domains collect most citations: review platforms, community forums, video platforms, publications and competitors' comparison pages. Your own site is one source among many, and for category prompts it is rarely the first one an engine cites.

Citation analysis across your prompt set shows exactly which domains those are and which of them cite competitors but not you. That list is the digital PR plan.

## Review platforms and directories

Software review sites and category directories are cited for "best" and comparison prompts because they list many products with structured attributes. A complete, current profile with real reviews is often the fastest visibility gain available.

## Communities and video

Forum threads and videos are cited for how-to and "is X worth it" prompts. Genuine participation (answering questions, publishing walkthroughs) earns mentions that engines treat as independent evidence. Astroturfing is detected by the communities before it is detected by the engines, and it damages both.

## Publications and comparisons by others

Being included in a journalist's or analyst's comparison, with accurate facts, is the citation that generalizes across the most prompts. Make it easy: a public facts page, screenshots, pricing that does not require a call, and a contact that answers.

## Key takeaways

- Find the domains cited for your prompts; they are the targets.
- Complete review-site and directory profiles first; they win comparison prompts.
- Participate honestly in communities and publish video for how-to prompts.
- Make your facts easy for third parties to get right.
