Citation (in an AI answer)
A citation is a source link an AI answer engine attaches to its answer, showing which page a statement was drawn from.
Citations are the mechanism by which AI search sends traffic and trust to websites. A mention tells you the engine knows a brand; a citation tells you which page it trusted enough to point users to.
Engines cite differently. Perplexity numbers every source, ChatGPT with search shows a sources list, Gemini links through a redirect that resolves to the real page, and AI Overviews show link cards. A tracker normalizes these into one list of cited URLs per answer.
Citation analysis aggregates those URLs across prompts: which domains are cited most in a category, which of your own pages ever get cited, and which pages cite competitors but not you.
